Ghughuti, celebrated on the day of Makar Sankranti is a pan-Uttaranchal festival. There is also a fair called the “Uttarainee mela” which is held on this day. There is a food-item by the same name which is prepared on this day which resembles in shape a bird by the same name. On this day, the sun enters the Zodiacal sign of ‘Makar’ (Capricon) and this marks a change of season which prompts various bird species to return to the hills.
The food items depicted in the picture are worn by children into a garland with an orange at the center and they venture outdoors singing to the birds (crows specially) and coaxing them to eat those sweetmeats (also known as Ghughuti) and offering them the same. The children eat the rest by themselves. Sounds like fun, aint it.
Thanks Ankana Joshi for the wonderful preparation. Also, please mail her if you would be keen to know the recipe @ ankanajoshi@gmail.com
